BMW Northwest Sends MGI Winners and Club Pro to BMW Golf Cup in Pinehurst

BMW Northwest Sends  TCGC MGI Winners and Club Pro
to BMW Golf Cup in Pinehurst

Early October Tacoma Country and Golf Club Member Guest Invitational winners, Chip Montague and Andy Karnath represented BMW Northwest at the BMW Golf Cup International US Final, held at the stunning Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina. Joining the winning pair on the all expenses paid competition were TCGC’s own First Assistant Professional, Mitch Runge, and BMW Northwest’s General Sales Manager, Allen Deen.

A Golf Lover’s Dream

The experience dazzled both on and off the course. Runge was immediately charmed by the Southern hospitality at the resort’s Carolina Hotel and Holly Inn, while Montague, a construction field coordinator hailing from Sumner was impressed by the all around five-star treatment: “At almost every turn it seemed like I heard, ‘BMW has got that for you.’” As for the golf itself? Playing Pinehurst’s celebrated No. 2 course twice was a highlight for Montague, while Runge enjoyed returning to the famed course calling it “the best of what we have to offer in the US for championship golf.”

The Final Takeaway

The grand finale turned into a real nail biter, which saw Runge up against Broadmoor Golf Club’s Head Pro, Tim Feenstra, who was ahead for the entire round until Runge’s two birdies on the last four holes, followed by a five-foot par putt on 18, positioned him to tie for first place. A scorecard playoff ultimately crowned Feenstra the winner, but Runge remains grateful for the opportunity that BMW Northwest made possible for him, noting: “This trip is the highlight of my year.” Now that’s good sportsmanship!

50 Years of MGI and BMW Northwest 50th Anniversary

This year is BMW Northwest’s 50th Anniversary and it’s also 50 years of the TCGC MGI Tournament.  “It’s a great event and we like being a part of it.” commented BMW Northwest owner Manfred Scharmach.   “Thanks to this year’s players and to Greg Hanson for the great work he did on the tournament and a big congratulations to Montague, Karnath and Runge on their games.”

Tutta Bella Serves ‘Il Presidente’ Pizza Beginning President’s Day

Special “Il Presidente” Neapolitan Pizza Created by America’s Only VPN Gold Certified Pizzaiolo Chef Brian Gojdics

Seattle, Wash.—(February 21, 2012)— To coincide with President’s Day, Tutta Bella will offer the ‘Il Presidente’ pizza as a special for $13.50 for one week only at all Tutta Bella locations starting  Monday, February 20 through Sunday, February 26. Tutta Bella’s four locations are Columbia City, Wallingford (Stone Way), Issaquah or South Lake Union (Westlake),

Photos of Friday’s delivery of the Il Presidente pizza and the delivery to Air Force One are available at http://goo.gl/eY68d.

“A visit from the White House inspired us to create this special pizza we named ‘Il Presidente’ to satisfy The President’s love of spicy food. The pizza is topped with hot Calabrian chiles along with Seattle’s own Mama Lil’s pickled peppers and locally made Isernio’s Italian sausage, extra virgin olive oil, fresh mozzarella, roasted peppers, basil and grana padano,” says Tutta Bella Executive Chef Brian Gojdics.

A few years back, Joe Fugere was recognized by President Obama during a speech where he made a remark directed at Fugere’s Tutta Bella stating,“ I still haven’t tasted the pizza, but he [Joe Fugere] promises I’m going to get some at some point.”

While President Obama’s schedule last Friday did not allow for a personal visit to one of Tutta Bella’s four Neapolitan Pizzeria locations in Columbia City, Wallingford (Stone Way), Issaquah or South Lake Union (Westlake), special arrangements were made to forgo lunch and have the pizzas specially delivered to Air Force One.

Though it was no small feat, Fugere made special arrangements to have the coveted VPN (Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana) certified DOC designated pizza ready for pick-up at Paine Field in order to fulfill the President’s desire to have a taste of Tutta Bella’s renowned Neapolitan pizza.

Fugere had met with the President in Seattle to discuss the issues facing small businesses in a challenging economic climate, and was subsequently invited to the White House for the signing of the Small Business Jobs Act (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKUycnkGXTs) on September 27, 2010.

Since opening its doors in Columbia City in 2004, Tutta Bella has been a trailblazer not only in providing the best Italian wood-fired pizza in Seattle, but it has been recognized locally and nationally, time and again, for being an exemplary leader in the small business community.

Founded in 2004, Tutta Bella has four locations; Columbia City, Stone Way, Westlake and Issaquah. For more information on specific locations, visit www.tuttabella.com.

Fox’s Gem Shop Kicks Off 100-Year Anniversary with Leap Year Tradition

Fox’s Leap Year Sale, February 28 through March 3

SEATTLE, Wash.—(February 16, 2012) —For more than a century, Fox’s Gem Shop has been assisting men in selecting the perfect engagement ring for that much-anticipated proposal of marriage, and on February 29, Fox’s invites the ladies to do the same. In honor of their 25th Leap Year in business, Fox’s eagerly awaited, once-every-four-years sale will extend from February 28 through March 3.

“We have a sale on wedding rings, designer jewelry and watches only once every four years. So we make it a good one!” said third-generation Director of Operations Zoey Mann.

While Fox’s isn’t suggesting that all women should propose to their significant others this Leap Year, they do encourage everyone to create their own Leap Year traditions to celebrate this rare day because only once in a Leap Year comes a perfect moment.

SEATTLE, Wash.—(February 6, 2012)— On December 22, 2011, the Karen Mullen Breast Cancer Foundation presented UW Medicine with $50,000 to support their breast cancer research efforts.

The Karen Mullen Breast Cancer Foundation identifies the most promising breast cancer studies taking place in the most successful research labs and helps fund them.

The Seattle-based foundation was established in honor of Karen Mullen, who was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in October 2006. Even though her disease was detected early, triple-negative disease is stubborn and persistent, and, ultimately, she did not survive.

UW Medicine healthcare organization was selected as the recipient of $50,000 raised during “Slice of Hope,” which took place last year. UW Medicine, which comprises Harborview Medical Center, Northwest Hospital & Medical Center, Valley Medical Center, UW Medical Center, UW Neighborhood Clinics, UW Physicians, the UW School of Medicine and Airlift Northwest, is among the nation’s leading breast cancer care and research facilities.

“The breast cancer research being conducted at UW Medicine is critical to improving cancer outcomes,” said Julie Gralow, M.D., director of breast medical oncology at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, a consortium of UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Children’s. “We are grateful for the efforts that Garrett Mullen and his board members and friends have made on behalf of UW Medicine breast cancer research.”

“Slice of Hope,” spearheaded by Pizza Today magazine editor Jeremy White, brought together national and local pizzerias, including Seattle’s own Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria, to raise money for the Karen Mullen Breast Cancer Foundation. Participating pizzerias donated 15 percent of pizza sales on October 7 and raised a total of $50,000. More than $20,000 of the total was given by Tutta Bella.

In the continued effort to help end this disease, “Slice of Hope” will take place again in October 2012. For more information about “Slice of Hope,” visit: www.pizzatoday.com/sliceOhope.

About Karen Mullen Breast Cancer Foundation

Founded in 2011, Karen Mullen Breast Cancer Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Seattle that funds promising breast cancer research studies being conducted at the most successful research labs across the United States. The foundation was established in honor of Karen Mullen, who lost her life to breast cancer, and in tribute to all women who have or will someday have breast cancer. NEW YEAR’S EVE TRAVEL TIPS FROM THE AUSTRALIA TRAVEL EXPERTS AT DOWN UNDER ANSWERS

It’s Not Too Late to be Among the First to Ring in 2012 in Sydney or Hobart, Australia

image

BELLEVUE, Wash.—(December 20, 2011)— Down Under Answers (www.duatravel.com), the leading wholesaler of vacation packages to Australia, reminds curious travelers that it’s not too late to plan for New Year’s Eve revelry Aussie style.

While the rest of the world, save Antarctica, waits for the stroke of midnight to celebrate the passing of another year Australia will already be in the throes of welcoming 2012.

Said Down Under Answers Sales Manager Jason Mesnick, “Without a doubt, the most renowned place to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Australia is Sydney, and for those looking at ringing in the New Year in a smaller more intimate setting, then Hobart is an excellent option!”

In Sydney, travelers can expect nearly a million and a half revelers celebrating New Year’s Eve in Sydney Harbour.

A smoking ceremony from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander vessels cleanses the famous Sydney Harbour of negative spirits and the New Year countdown is projected on the Sydney Harbour Bridge pylons. At 8:45 p.m. the Acknowledgement of Country begins and pays respect to the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation. Custodians call up the first reveal of the Bridge Effect, which is a spectacular graphic display with a series of brilliant fireworks.

“Imagine a mind-blowing grand finale featuring fireworks launched in tandem from seven barges on the Sydney Harbour, seven city skyscrapers rooftops and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. There is nothing like it in the world,” comments Mesnick.

Of all the things to do in Hobart Tasmania, New Year’s Eve in Sullivan’s Cove is a world-class party featuring bands, roving entertainers and two sets of fireworks and is one of Hobart’s great attractions.

“Arrive early to Sullivan’s and get a prime viewing spot for the fireworks, which explode in awe-inspiring color over Hobart’s striking sandstone buildings. Get Tickets for The Taste of Tasmania party, where foodies can sample delectable Tasmanian fare from more than 70 food booths” suggests Mesnick.

Fox’s Gem Shop’s Dazzling Window Displays of Antique Teddy Bears Delight Holiday Shoppers

clip_image001clip_image002clip_image003

SEATTLE, Wash. – (November 23, 2011) – Every year, just before Thanksgiving, Fox’s Gem Shop (located downtown on 5th and Union) fills their storefront windows with a spectacular display of teddy bears. Ten of Fox’s windows boast imaginative dioramas showcasing more than 100 antique teddy bears and Americana collectibles. Each window is designed with its own distinct theme, making this local jewelry shop a magical destination during the holiday season.

Fox’s Gem Shop, celebrating its 100-year anniversary in 2012, invites families to pay a visit to its charming teddy bear windows before making the short walk between The Fairmont Olympic Hotel’s Teddy Bear Suite and the Gingerbread Village at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel.

Fox’s tradition of antique teddy bears was introduced in the 1970s before owners Joy and Chai Mann started collecting, but today all the treasures on view are from their own teddy bear collection that they have been amassing since the early 1980s.

“We’re probably the only jewelry store in the country that doesn’t have jewelry displayed in our windows during the holidays,” laughs Chai Mann.

Each window chronicles cherished moments from the Manns’ history. Whether purchased from an antique store, brought back from Europe or donated by a thoughtful passerby, every bear has its own unique, colorful story.

This year’s teddy bear windows include:

Bathtub Window
The two bears in this window are relaxing in a tub that Chai himself bathed in as a child. These bears from the 1930s were found in a flea market in England.

Nurse Window
This window features furniture made by “hobos” or “tramps,” as they were called during the Great Depression, who traveled the railways in search of work. They created furniture out of whatever materials were available, such as orange crates and cigar boxes. This distinctive style became known as Tramp Art, and is highly sought after by collectors.

Typewriter Window
A tribute to Joy’s father, Sid Thal, this window includes a typewriter from the early 1900s and an old Seattle Times apron with pouches used to collect change for the newspaper in the 1950s. Also included in this window is Sid’s little green book, Loose Gems, which contains many of the ads he created for Fox’s while already in his 80s.

Other windows this year include a cooking window, sled window, sushi window, fireplace window, beach window, sewing window and wedding window.

The display of teddy bears has become a cherished ritual, not only for Fox’s Gem Shop, but for families growing up in Seattle as well. One long-time Seattle resident recalls her first visit to Fox’s teddy bear display:

“When I came to Seattle almost 25 years ago, I searched the city at Christmas for something to delight me and my five-year-old daughter. Thrilled by the teddies at Fox’s Gem Shop, I knew that I’d found ‘home,’ or a place for us, when I spotted the Hanukkah menorahs, cards and dreidels in the window,” says Louise Olsen.

Fox’s also offers greeting cards featuring teddy bear scenes much like the window displays for customers to share with family and friends. Packets of five cards are $20 and single cards are $5 each. All proceeds from cards purchased are donated to Northwest Harvest.

Fox’s Gem Shop’s teddy bear windows will be on display until the end of December. For those seeking comfort from the cold, Fox’s Gem Shop invites guests inside to peruse their collection of fine jewelry and watches. With a wide variety of timepieces and gems, Fox’s has the perfect holiday gift for every budget and style.

Also on October 7 a small team of cyclists led by Jeremy White, Pizza Today editor and Pete Lachapelle, Pizza Today publisher, completed a 173 mile bike ride from Portland, Ore. to Seattle, Wash., to raise awareness for Slice of Hope’s fight against breast cancer.

“Advances in research give hope to those battling breast cancer, even if it’s for a day, an hour, or a moment—hope means everything to them. That is why we are directing all of the money raised to research—for hope in bringing an end to this disease,” says Garrett Mullen, founder of the Karen Mullen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Altura Restaurant to Open October 5, 2011

A welcome addition to the burgeoning dining scene at the North End of Broadway, Altura—meaning ‘hill’ in Italian—offers a refined dining experience in a rustic-elegant setting on Capitol Hill. The restaurant has been carved out of a former retail space in a nearly century-old building featuring 18th- and19th-century European antiques and antique furnishings, exposed fir structural beams and an exposed-brick chimney, and repurposed oak church pews for banquette seating.

Driven by seasonality and local availability, the weekly changing menu showcases artistically presented Italian fare and draws inspiration from the Northwest. Most produce, meat, seafood and foraged items will be sourced locally from Pike Place Market vendors, specialty Italian purveyors, and the sizable vegetable and herb garden the Lockwoods tend at their North Seattle home. Altura offers dinner service Tuesday through Saturday from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. and is located at 617 Broadway E. on Capitol Hill.
