Cafe Flora Puts Amore on the Menu with Romance-Inducing Dishes

Handmade Chocolate Truffles Add a Sweet Ending—or Beginning—to Valentine’s Day

clip_image001

SEATTLE, Wash.—(January 27, 2011)— Celebrating its 20th year in Madison Valley, Cafe Flora will play Cupid with a special vegetarian Valentine’s menu designed to ratchet up the romance level.

Cafe Flora’s culinary team has relied, and naturally so, on the bounty of the earth for inspiration in creating this year’s lovingly named dishes and amorous ingredients.  Offered at $45 per person on Monday, February 14, from 5 to 9 p.m., this reservation-only, four-course, prix fixe Valentine’s Dinner Menu includes these love-inducing ingredients:

· Asparagus, once said to “stir up lust in man and woman,” was fed to bridegrooms in 19th-century France—three courses’ worth—on the eve of their nuptials.

· Regarded as symbols of fertility throughout antiquity, almonds and their seductive aroma were believed to arouse passion in females.

· Rich and creamy in texture and voluptuously feminine in shape, avocados were considered so libidinous that Spanish priests forbade people from eating them.

· Widely consumed throughout Asia and the Americas, chili peppers up the romance quotient by raising body temperature and bringing a healthy glow to the cheeks.

· Red wine heightens the senses while lowering inhibitions. Notes in the bouquet of certain red wines are even said to mimic male pheromones.

· Most people admit to having “great chemistry” with the world’s most popular confection, Chocolate, which contains the stimulant theobromine, similar to caffeine. This “food of the gods”—the darker the better—helps the brain produce serotonin, and is loaded with antioxidants.

The full Valentine’s Day menu featuring these ingredients can be found below.

Oysters may possess a long-cherished lusty reputation, but many plant-based foods, like asparagus, almonds and chocolate, are believed to evoke amore. “We’re celebrating our twentieth year in Madison Valley in 2011, so we wanted to do something really special for all our vegetarian and vegan Valentines out there,” says owner Nat Stratton-Clarke. “Everybody knows about the oyster, but we’ll be demonstrating that the likes of avocados and asparagus are well-versed in the art of seduction in their own right.”

If dinner weren’t enough, Cafe Flora’s housemade truffles, a Valentine’s Day tradition, will be available for purchase in the restaurant from February 7 – 14 at $2 each. Gluten-free and vegan, this year’s truffle flavors include raspberry and nibby gianduja, a traditional Italian confection flavored with hazelnut paste.  The chocolate comes from Seattle’s own Theo Chocolate: Theo sources fair-trade, organic cocoa beans exclusively, which makes them a perfect partner in keeping with the restaurant’s philosophy.

Cafe Flora Rings in 2011 with Luck-Themed New Year’s Offerings

Special Dishes on December 31 and January 1 Designed to Bring Good Fortune

SEATTLE, Wash.—(December 21, 2010)— To ring in 2011 on a prosperous and healthful note, Cafe Flora is doubling diners’ chances for good fortune. For the first time, in addition to offering their popular New Year’s Day brunch, Seattle’s favorite vegetarian restaurant will also feature a special New Year’s prix fixe dinner.

Certain foods are thought to bring good luck when eaten at the New Year. Cooked greens and cabbage look like folded currency, and thus are symbolic of economic fortune. Anything flat and round brings to mind coins, or money; round cakes, pastries, and other foods in the shape of a ring symbolize “coming full circle”. In China, the kumquat is considered a particularly lucky plant, bringing happiness and wealth; and long noodles represent longevity and prosperity.

Offered alongside the regular menu on both December 31 and January 1, the three-course, prix fixe Lucky Dinner Menu includes:

Lucky Dinner Menu

1st course

Winter Rolls—with water chestnuts, ginger, seitan, cabbage and carrot, stuffed into a crispy roll served with orange-kumquat dipping sauce and grilled jicama pomegranate salad.

2nd course

Fresh-Made Linguini—tossed with sun-dried tomato olive tapenade, and topped with a sauté of winter greens, fennel, pine nuts and goat Gouda cheese.

3rd course

Triple Chocolate Fortune—a white chocolate disc, flourless chocolate cake, chocolate ganache, lemon truffle center, yuzu foam and a crescent cookie. (Gluten-free)

$45 per person. Reservations available for parties of eight or more. Includes a complimentary glass of Champagne. All bottles of bubbly offered at half-off listed price.

Available only on New Year’s Day, the special Brunch Buffet will feature:

Brunch Buffet

Fruit and Pastries

A variety of fresh fruit and fresh baked pastries, including:

· Blueberry tea bread

· Vegan orange-glazed mini cinnamon roll bites

Salads

Freshly made salads, featuring a variety of organic wild greens, house-made dressings and local produce, including:

  • Organic spinach and endive with green apple and crumbled Roquefort
  • Winter greens with quinoa, dried cherries and toasted almonds
  • Marinated grilled-vegetables with a balsamic reduction

Entrées

Signature breakfast scrambles and more, including:

· Fall Forager Scramble—locally-foraged golden chanterelle and crimini mushrooms with roasted butternut squash and fresh sage.

· Flora Morning Scramble—fresh spinach, caramelized onions, and chopped Roma tomatoes with fresh herbs.

· Crème Brulée French Toast—handcrafted Columbia City Bakery brioche baked in a rich cinnamon-orange custard with glistening caramel, and topped with fresh tropical fruit.

· Potato Latkes—traditional potato pancakes served with warm house-made applesauce and chive crème fraîche.

Buffet will also feature a variety of traditional breakfast accompaniments.

$20 per person/$12 per child 12-years and under. Saturday, January 1, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Reservations available for parties of eight or more.

Cafe Flora focuses on utilizing predominantly local, organic and sustainable produce and herbs, and remains dedicated to nurturing strong and direct relationships with Washington’s farmers and foragers. The culinary team draws inspiration from international traditions along with abundant, locally grown ingredients to create imaginative and dynamic vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free cuisine. Regularly featured on Seattle’s numerous “Best Of” lists for vegetarian and vegan dining, Café Flora has also been named the Best Vegetarian Restaurant in the Pacific Northwest by Vegetarian Times magazine.

“Since we’ve added dinner to our New Year’s dining options, we’ll be providing all the luck our guests need to get 2011 off to a terrific start, so we’re requesting they leave the lucky rabbit’s foot at home,” adds owner Nat Stratton-Clarke.

Cafe Flora’s award-winning menu features modern and sophisticated vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free cuisine inspired by international culinary traditions and created with local, organic and sustainable ingredients. Cafe Flora Features Half-Priced Wine Wednesdays Through October

clip_image002

Wine Program Reflects Cafe Flora’s Mission to Support Pacific Northwest Producers

SEATTLE, Wash.—(October 7, 2010)—Cafe Flora has always been dedicated to employing local, sustainable and organic elements at every level of their operation, and now they’ve honed in on Washington state. Once again, Seattle’s favorite vegetarian restaurant has reinforced its mission by staying close to home

Cafe Flora is emphasizing their locally-focused wine menu by offering half-off every bottle on Wednesday nights through the end of the month—October 6, 13, 20 and 27.

Of the revised list, wine director Brandon Sanford elaborates, “Of course, the proof is in the glass. It’s important not only that a wine be delicious, but that it’s also a great fit for our cuisine. Supporting our local community and small producers is what we’re all about, and we’re truly blessed to live in a part of the country that’s home to so many world-class wineries.”

In addition to superior flavor profiles, and a predominant Northwest focus, Sanford searches out wines that are organic, biodynamic and vegan. He’s also drawn to intriguing family stories and wineries that, in keeping with the Cafe Flora mission, give back to the land and the community of which they are a part:

· Washington’s Kyra Winery employs sustainable growing practices, and their 2008 Dolcetto ($45) is vegan, made in the traditional Italian style using Wahluke Slope fruit, aged in neutral oak. (Half priced savings $22.50)

· The 2007 Eyrie Pinot Gris ($38, Willamette Valley, Ore.), vegan and organic, is rich, dry and complex. Eyrie has an impressive history with this popular grape: The first Pinot Gris vines in the New World were planted at Eyrie Vineyards in 1965. (Half priced savings $19)

· Part of the proceeds of every 2007 Zero One Wild Sky Cabernet Sauvignon sold ($65, Walla Walla Valley, Wash.) benefits Leave No Trace, a worldwide non-profit organization dedicated to promoting responsible enjoyment and stewardship of the outdoors. (Half priced savings $32.50)

· For those with an affinity for the arts, a portion of sales of the 2008 Chateau Rollat Semillion ($50, Columbia Valley, Wash.) helps to support the Seattle Dance Project. (Half priced savings $25)

“We couldn’t think of a better way to introduce our Northwest wine list than with our very first half-off wine special,” adds owner Nat Stratton-Clarke. “Our local, holistic philosophy carries through the entire restaurant, from the food and décor to the cocktail menu and, now, the wine.”

Cafe Flora’s award-winning menu features modern and sophisticated vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free cuisine inspired by international culinary traditions and created with local, organic and sustainable ingredients. Voted one of Seattle Weekly’s “Favorite Restaurants 2006,” Cafe Flora was also awarded “Best Vegetarian Restaurant” by Seattle Magazine eight years running.
