SEATTLE, Wash.—(February 6, 2012)— On December 22, 2011, the Karen Mullen Breast Cancer Foundation presented UW Medicine with $50,000 to support their breast cancer research efforts.

The Karen Mullen Breast Cancer Foundation identifies the most promising breast cancer studies taking place in the most successful research labs and helps fund them.

The Seattle-based foundation was established in honor of Karen Mullen, who was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in October 2006. Even though her disease was detected early, triple-negative disease is stubborn and persistent, and, ultimately, she did not survive.

UW Medicine healthcare organization was selected as the recipient of $50,000 raised during “Slice of Hope,” which took place last year. UW Medicine, which comprises Harborview Medical Center, Northwest Hospital & Medical Center, Valley Medical Center, UW Medical Center, UW Neighborhood Clinics, UW Physicians, the UW School of Medicine and Airlift Northwest, is among the nation’s leading breast cancer care and research facilities.

“The breast cancer research being conducted at UW Medicine is critical to improving cancer outcomes,” said Julie Gralow, M.D., director of breast medical oncology at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, a consortium of UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Children’s. “We are grateful for the efforts that Garrett Mullen and his board members and friends have made on behalf of UW Medicine breast cancer research.”

“Slice of Hope,” spearheaded by Pizza Today magazine editor Jeremy White, brought together national and local pizzerias, including Seattle’s own Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria, to raise money for the Karen Mullen Breast Cancer Foundation. Participating pizzerias donated 15 percent of pizza sales on October 7 and raised a total of $50,000. More than $20,000 of the total was given by Tutta Bella.

In the continued effort to help end this disease, “Slice of Hope” will take place again in October 2012. For more information about “Slice of Hope,” visit: www.pizzatoday.com/sliceOhope.

(SEATTLE, Wash.) — October 12, 2011 —Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria, with locations in Columbia City, Stone Way, Westlake and Issaquah raised $20,373 for ‘Slice of Hope’—all of which was donated to the Karen Mullen Breast Cancer Foundation, a national charity based in Seattle.

For ‘Slice of Hope’, both national and local pizzerias across the country joined together to support the nation’s leading breast cancer researchers, including those at UW Medicine and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

“The employees and customers really rallied for ‘Slice of Hope’. Two servers at our Stone Way location raised more than $1,500 and the staff at Columbia City donated all of their tips on October 7. It is a testimonial to the generosity of our staff and customers.” says Joe Fugere, owner and founder of Tutta Bella. “This fundraiser is especially impactful because our Westlake location is near the medical centers where promising research is happening,” Fugere continues.

Also on October 7 a small team of cyclists led by Jeremy White, Pizza Today editor and Pete Lachapelle, Pizza Today publisher, completed a 173 mile bike ride from Portland, Ore. to Seattle, Wash., to raise awareness for Slice of Hope’s fight against breast cancer.

“Advances in research give hope to those battling breast cancer, even if it’s for a day, an hour, or a moment—hope means everything to them. That is why we are directing all of the money raised to research—for hope in bringing an end to this disease,” says Garrett Mullen, founder of the Karen Mullen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Olive Crest Participates in GiveBIG June 23

Olive Crest is doing big things to change the lives of children who would otherwise have no hope or chance of a safe and secure family

BELLEVUE, Wash. – (June 2, 2011) – The Pacific Northwest Olive Crest is participating in The Seattle Foundation’s first ever GiveBIG challenge on June 23.  It is a campaign that encourages the community to give back to all the non-profits in the area that help make King County a better place to live and is predicted to be one of the biggest giving days in King County history.

Between the hours of 7 a.m. and midnight, non-profit organizations around King County will rally for donor support. The Seattle Foundation and business sponsors, CHASE, Seattle Sounders FC and Seattle International Foundation will partially match funds raised by organizations, such as Olive Crest, during the 17 hours of GiveBIG.

The goal of the event is to encourage new and returning supporters to donate to local non-profits like Olive Crest. Olive Crest is doing big things to change the lives of children who would otherwise have no hope or chance for a safe and secure family.  Olive Crest plans to use GiveBIG to raise awareness about the prevalence of child abuse in Washington and the measures Olive Crest is taking against it.

According to Prevent Child Abuse America, every 10 seconds in the United States a child experiences some type of abuse such as rape, physical and psychological abuse.  For over a decade Olive Crest has provided programs such as adoption, foster care, and counseling to protect children from becoming a statistic. In Washington State alone, Olive Crest reaches over 4,089 children and families.  Through programs like Safe Families for Children, the entire community is involved in temporarily taking care of children whose parents are in crisis, with the ultimate goal of family reunification.

GiveBIG is an exciting opportunity for Olive Crest to continue the work that it does through raised awareness and donations for the children in the program.

Future Olive Crest benefits include:

· The 10th Annual Olive Crest Golf Tournament – On Sept. 26, Olive Crest will host a fundraiser to fight child abuse at one of the finest golf courses in the Northwest, Overlake Golf and Country Club. The tournament is currently open for registration.

· The Annual Wine Procurement Party – Oct. 12 will be a night of entertainment and fine wine at LOT No. 3 in Bellevue to benefit the at-risk children of Olive Crest.

Since 1973, Olive Crest has transformed the lives of over 50,000 abused, neglected, and at-risk children and their families. We work tirelessly to meet the individual needs of kids in crisis by providing safe homes, counseling, and education for both youth and parents. Our many innovative programs reflect our conviction that strengthening the family is one of the most powerful ways to help heal children. With unwavering compassion, the Olive Crest family maintains a lifelong commitment to the youth and families we serve even after they have graduated from our programs.
